How do doctors check to see how dilated you are? And when do they ?

Pelvic exam. The provider places their fingers at your cervix, the opening to the uterus. They can tell if/how dilated you are based on how far apart they can open the cervix with their 2 fingers.

They insert a finger into your vagina and press in/up until they find your cervix. Then depending on the size of your cervix based around the tip of their finger is how many cm you're dilated.
They usually start at 38w but a lot of OBs have stopped because dilation means nothing before you're in active labor, it's uncomfortable, sometimes painful and a waste unless you're overdue or having contractions.

Pelvic exam where they insert one or two fingers to check the opening (if there is any) of your cervix. It occurs usually after 37 weeks when you’re considered full term. My first pregnancy’s doctor didn’t check until I was 39 weeks but this pregnancy’s doctor starts at 37 weeks. I opted to not have it done because in my first pregnancy it is what sent me into labor and I need this baby to hold out for one more week until my mom gets here
