Prom dress question

For prom I want to wear a dress that is basically a gown. But with a gown I’m conscious that the size and ‘poofiness’ of it will just be hassle to deal with all nihht long-as we are always sitting and dancing. Am I right to think that I should just stick with a straight line dress?
