Is a pelvic exam done when you want birth control?

I’ve been debating on going on the pill but the whole thought of a pelvic exam scares the shit out of me (don’t tell me how important it is, I know). 
I was just wondering for the ladies that are on birth control, did you have to have a pelvic exam before you got it?

Answer

Doctors can’t preform any procedure you don’t consent to. I know some doctors “require” it and others don’t and it may be different in states as well. I went to the health department for my birth control and they didn’t even mention anything about it. I also did not want to get a pelvic exam and it’s really not necessary for birth control that isn’t put into your vagina. They took my blood pressure and asked some questions and then I told them what I wanted and got it the same day.
