Finding a graduate job with a baby

Antonia • 💍

Hi guys. I am currently about to graduate from a university in England. I am also 4.5 months pregnant, which means that I cannot find a full time job for my degree ( BA International Relations) before the baby is born.

I am still working part time in the catering industry in the university, which is a student’s job.

I am really stressing about finding a job after the baby is born as I will either need to earn more than the average in order to be able to afford the baby’s nursery, commuting and work related costs and living costs (house, bills and food) or find a professional part- time job for 3 days a week, which will minimize the child care costs as I will be at home to care of the baby. I am also really stressed about being away from it at such a young age and having other non- qualified people (family members) take care of it scares me to death.

However, considering that I have no professional experience, apart from a few media internships, I do not think anyone would hire me on part-time basis for a qualified job.

This means that even if i work, the costs will be more than what my salary will be.

Has anyone been in this situation?

Is it possible to find a professional job/ career straight out of university and with a newborn baby?

Do you tell your employer about your situation when they ask why you have taken a year off before applying?

How likely are they going to be to hire a young mum (with minimal experience and family commitments) for a graduate job, when the majority of them are looking for flexible and career devoted people, who can work over hours and go for team-building activities?
