Depo Shot?

I got the depo-shot last Saturday (6/2/19) and it is now 5 days later (6/6/19). How long does it take for the depo-shot to start working effectively and when will I be safe to have sex without condoms?

Answer

It all depends on when you got it. If you got in during the first 5-7 days of your menstrual cycle then you’re protected immediately. If you weren’t on your period when you got the shot then you should wait around 1-2 weeks. I had the shot for about a year and when I got it for the second time I wasn’t on my period, (because the shot caused me to not get my period whatsoever for the entire time that I had it) and my doctor advised me to wait 1-2 weeks before having unprotected sex to make sure that I was covered before doing so. Based off of my experience, the shot isn’t my favorite. I got it initially because I wanted to avoid any BC pills or the Copper IUD
(I had no idea that there was a non-copper IUD like Mirena, Skyla or Liletta.) I also wasn’t fond of the idea of getting the implant in my arm due to the horrible stories I would hear about it. I had the shot for about a year and I didn’t get my period on it whatsoever. I did notice some weight gain. I don’t think my mental health was affected by it but I did notice that my sex drive did decline dramatically over time. Everyone’s body is different so do as much research as you can and speak to your OBGYN so they can help you with choosing the best one for your body and needs.
