So I have a almost 3 year old in a 5 point harness booster who is 50 pounds how long can he stay in the 5 point harness before he has to go to a regular seatbelt?

It will be years until your child is ready for seat belt only. My daughter didn’t switch to a high back booster until she was 7, so she was in a 5 point harness until her 7th birthday.

Depends on the car seat. We moved my nephew into a booster seat (from a 5 point harness car seat) when he was 5.

What brand is the carseat ? Most of them have a weight limit for each setting and stage for the child.

Depends on your seat, but most 5-point harness boosters accommodate up to 65 or 70lbs (check your manual for specific height and weight limits if your particular seat). 
Either way it should be quite a while before your child is using just the seatbelt. You want to keep them in a 5 point harness until at least 5, and then transition to a highback booster and eventually backless booster before ultimately using just the seatbelt. (Which could be around 10-12 years old).

Though he may meet the size requirements, it isn’t advised to move to a booster this young. Even though his weight and height is that of an older child, his Skelton is that of his own age which is safer in a 5 pt harness.
