Unsure if I can use thin crib mattress?

I purchased the DaVinci Kalani mini crib and it comes with a very thin maybe one-inch “mattress”. I went into my local baby store to buy the 5 inch DaVinci TotalCoil mattress to replace the super thin one for my newborn baby but the owner told me it’s actually recommended for newborns up to 6 months to sleep on that thin mattress that the crib comes with and that the thicker mattress is for when they get older. Is this true? I didn’t find that info online when I was researching and just want to use something that’s going to be safe as well comfortable for my newborn.

Babies should sleep on hard mattresses. Especially newborns. It’s not recommended to add any mattresses to basinettes or pack and plays. That’s a safety and suffocation hazard. 
So if you want baby to be as safe as possible, use only the mattress that it came with.

Yep you can use a thin mattress most crib mattress are thin because babies aren’t heavy and they need a firm surface to lay on.. once they older 6months plus I would buy a thicker mattress.. I’ve had 3 babies and they all had thin 1-2 inches in there crib and we always brought a thicker one when they was older..

It’s probably true, my newborns mattress is very thin. You want it to be firm. Id not risk using one that they tell you is unsuitable for your child’s age :) x
