My mom was talking on the phone with her friend and she said the reason so and so got HIV was because she got hpv. Not sure how?

No. That’s not at all how that works. HPV and HIV are two separate viruses. One does not cause the other. And someone who has HIV doesn’t necessarily have AIDS either. It’s possible to be HIV positive but not have AIDS.
