Copper IUD?

Question

I’m considering getting the copper IUD because it is non-hormonal. Does anyone have any experience with it? I’m not really interested in taking a pill everyday and I prefer something that is non-hormonal anyway.

I used it for two years between my first and second babies and had no issue with it and I’m planning on getting it again in a few weeks. My cramps were a bit worse and my period a bit heavier, particularly in the first three months, but it was never unbearable. I loved not having to deal with the emotional side effects of hormonal birth control.

I just got my first one put in at my pp check up. All good so far. Insertion was like a long pap smear. Uncomfortable, but not painful. Had some mild cramping a few hours later but ibuprofen took it away right away. Had some light bleeding after too which is normal. I too wanted it for the non hormonal aspect. I don't want anything messing with my mood. I did a lot of research before choosing the copper IUD. You should watch YouTube videos of girls talking about their experiences with the hormonal IUDs. That was enough to scare me away from them. But I'm so looking forward to 10 years of worry free birth control.

I always get the mirena BUT 3 of my friends had the copper and all of them got pregnant on it 😮

My period became extremely heavy and I had severe cramps. I had it in for almost a year and it never really eased up. Once removed my periods were so much better and I did get pregnant a few months later  I still would never get it put back in. It was awful.

My friend had the copper iud for 3 years with no complications. Her only complaint was that she smelled weird for a few hours after sex (he came inside her). She got pregnant 2 months after taking it out.

I have two friends that have it and have had it over 5 years and love it. Only thing they said was their periods became heavier on it but worth it to me for non-hormonal in my opinion

I plan on getting it because I don’t do well with hormonal birth control. We will try to use condoms as back-up because the only person I know who used the copper IUD also got pregnant with it.
