Can labor still start if I’m not dilated?

Just had my 36 week appt. doc said I’m not dilated but baby is head down and mucus plug will come out any day now. Can labor still start without dilation? Or does this mean I have weeks left?

The answer is yes. it can suddenly start and you could quickly dilate or you could have weeks left.

It can happen but I'm confused how will your mucus plug come out if you arent dilated? I thought you had to be dilated for that to happen.
