Successful Induction (Birth Story)
At my 35/36 week growth ultrasound, it was thought that the baby was measuring large (7 lbs, 2 oz at that time). My OB recommended an induction during my 39th week. Since 37 weeks, I had been measuring 2-3 cm, with my 38 week appointment measuring 3-4 cm. With my first child, I had a quick labor and went naturally at 38+3, so I had thought for sure this one would be natural and we could avoid induction. Regardless, we had scheduled our induction for Wednesday, June 19. I called in the AM on Wednesday, only to be told they were full, and there wasn’t any too . Talk about a downer! Thursday rolls around, I call into L&D 30 minutes earlier than I was told because I was anxious to get this going.
We check into L&D on Thursday, June 20 at 8 am. My OB broke my water around 9/9:30, and I was still measuring 3-4 cm. They started pitocin around 10:30. I wanted to get up and go walk because if I was going to be laboring all day, I wanted to spend as little amount in bed as possible. I started walking the halls with my mom and sister (my husband had ran to the car to get our things, etc.). I felt off and started feeling contractions, so my sister started timing them. I have a higher pain tolerance so I was just breathing and smiling through them. They started to get about 30 seconds apart, so I finally caved and said I needed the pain medications. I circled back to my nurse who was at the nurse’s station and let her know I was ready and we’d meet her in the room. She checked me and I was at a 6-7. Because I had dilated pretty quickly and baby was engaged, they skipped the epidural and I got an “ITN”, or a different spinal block. Reason was so that I could feel the relief immediately. I ended up dilating to a 10 within 10 minutes and felt pressure. I told my nurse, and she quickly called my doctor and she came running and my sweet little Lottie Corrine joined us at 12:05 pm, 5 minutes after we began pushing! It was truly amazing!
