How to get out of sales positions?

I’m 28, and all of my “adult” jobs so far have been in sales. I didn’t actually seek sales out, but found myself in a position where I desperately needed a job, and I applied at a company I was told “always hired.” This ended up being a sales position. I wasn’t particularly good despite trying very hard and having been a good employee otherwise and was let go after about a year.

I received unemployment during this time, and steadily looked for work for the entire six months, but because my resume only included sales positions, more sales positions were all that was ever offered to me. I applied for tons of secretary/administrative assistant positions and reached out to them on a regular basis, but was never considered for any of them or contacted back. Finally I had to take one of the sales positions being offered to me, as my unemployment had run out and I HAD to have a source of income.

My experience with this job has been much like the last. While I do have a great boss and co-workers, I’m still finding that sales isn’t a good fit for me. I take rejection hard, and I feel scummy and intrusive knocking on people’s doors. The hours are odd and while it was made to seem like they were quite flexible in the start, it seems they’re only flexible in the sense that if you have to miss work during the week, you “get to” make those hours up on a Saturday. Between the relentlessness of the hours and focus on numbers and sales, the constant arguing and debating with people who are usually not friendly and whom I’m uncomfortable pushing, I have major anxiety most of Sunday about the impending week, and I feel mentally and emotionally drained.

In three months, I’ll have been at the company long enough to put in for a request to change departments, but we also have to be qualified for said department and there has to be an opening. We already have an administrative assistant, and without a degree, the only other real option would be the call center, which is also slammed with constant sales targets and pushed to sell sell sell on top of taking payments and tech support, so it sounds just as bad if not worse.

How does one get out of the sales field, especially without a degree? Going back to college isn’t an option for me.
