Help with breast feeding?

Can I get some recommendation on how i should proceed because i am at a loss right now. My son was born yesterday I only stayed in the hospital for 24hours. This being said i breast feed that day 4 times but we had so much difficulty keeping him up he would just nap with the nipple in his mouth. Not me or his father could get him to co-operate. So we let him sleep (my first mistake) he was starving 6hours later but I didn't produce colostrum fast enough to feed him fully. Thus came the introduction of Formula in a already made bottle. He had a really hard time latching to the bottle but once he did he was set. Now today he is no longer used to my breast, he won't take the nipple at all because he is used to the bottle on top of it all i have become engorged from him not feeding so at this point the bottle is just easier but I worry about never getting him to latch again. Is there anything I can do or should I just back out now???

I would restrain him to your breast and get rid of the bottles. It may take some time and it’s not easy but he will get the hang of it. If you don’t have bottles available you won’t have the option to use them. Also pump on both sides to give you some relief. If you pump from one side while nursing on the other you will produce more milk. Your body will make what baby needs.

Firstly, stop bottles for at least a day. Offer the breast often, if you see him searching, licking his lips, raising his hand toward his face, offer the breast. It’s going to be tiring, sometimes he may want to nurse not even 15 minutes after he’s finished his last feed. That’s okay, offer it again. All of this will establish your supply and get him used to your nipple again. Discontinue bottle/pacifier/any other artificial nipple since it will confuse him. He may get frustrated at first since bottles release milk right away and the breast takes some time, just hand express a bit into his mouth to show him that it’s there.

Stop the formula immediately, call the lactation specialist and get him to the breast as much as possible. Your milk supply is supply and demand. If baby isn't drinking it, you won't produce.

I had the same issues. Had a preemie so we need to supplement. I used a nipple shield for breastfeeding because it was similar to the bottle. Once my milk came in we no longer need to supplement. I was persistent in my breastfeeding journey and continued to try my breast first then offer the shield. Finally at 3 months she took it without the shield. Now she is 6 months and is a pro. Won't take a bottle anymore though lol.

Your hospital should have also provided info on their lactation consultant. Like here she is open every Thursday at 11 am to help those that need it

My daughter was born 6 days ago and had issues latching while in the hospital to the point where she would frantically cry, which was really stressful for me. The lactation consultant at the hospital recommended a nipple shield, which didnt work all that well at first because my milk hadn't come in yet, so we started supplementing with formula and as soon as my milk came in, I started pumping whenever I could. So now, I give her whatever breast milk I'm able to pump in a bottle and if shes still hungry I give her formula. I also still let her breastfeed during the night feedings using the nipple shield and she seems to be getting the hang of it. Just do whatever feels right day by day and try not to stress too much.
