How do you put your baby down to sleep?

So I know you are supposed to swaddle and infant and then place them on their back in their bassinet/crib, but my 4 week old son absolutely HATES his swaddle! He wants his arms to be free and he literally will not sleep in a swaddle no matter how long I leave him in it. I know he needs to be on his back but is it okay for his arms to he free? I am getting zero sleep and just wondering if anyone else had or has this issue?

Swaddling isn’t a safety thing. We swaddle babies because of the Moro reflex which can keep them from sleeping. But if it’s not working for your baby, there is no reason from a safety standpoint why you would have to.

Then let his arms be free. Our son never had his arms swaddled in because he didn’t like it. We used the halo sleep sack type swaddled so we swaddled his torso nice and snug but not his arms.

My son always wiggled his arms out of the swaddle so we stopped swaddling his arms. But he also just hated being swaddled so we quit altogether around 4 weeks old

I stopped putting my son's arms in the swaddle because he likes to sleep on his side and my pediatrician told me that it's better to leave his arms out because if he rolled onto his face he wouldn't have his arms to help him get his face up off his mattress. He doesn't really like his arms swaddled anyway. He's 2 weeks old and sleeps great with his arms out on his back or his side 😊

My first hated being swaddled since birth, I used sleep sacks from the beginning with him. My second tolerates the swaddle but only with his arms out, he’s 6 weeks and I’m going to switch him to the sleep sack in a few days.

my son is the exact same..he hates his arms swaddled but sleeps better when they are somewhat swaddled...I usually swaddle him but leave one hand out so he gets some comfort from that...even in my womb he liked having his face against my placenta and someone told me to be prepared that he may like to have things in front of his face when sleeping and he definitely prefers his hand there

I have never swaddled my little one, he's 4 months now and loves to sprawl out, he sleeps with his arms and legs wide apart, it isn't necessary to swaddle but most people do as it can be comforting to some babies and can stop their newborn reflex with the arms, if he hates it either just either give up on swaddling or you can buy one where you can have the arms out

Yes it’s safe not to swaddle. It’s just a preference. 
Just make sure you let baby on their back.

Oh yes if he wants his arms free go for it.  Wont hurt a thing.  If youre afraid of him getting cold maybe look into a sleep sack
