Does this make me a mean person

A man I had been talking to for a few months had a girlfriend that I didn’t know about until around 2 weeks ago and ever since that I’ve had to help him through some things with his girlfriend because she has cheated on him. 2 days ago he told me he loved me and asked me if I loved him and I said yes because I didn’t know what to say, all I wanted to do with him was to have another friend. He then broke up with his girlfriend to be with me and I don’t like him in that way so I said no and told him I needed a break from the friendship and I now don’t know what to do next if someone can help them please tell me what I can do.
