IUI vs IVF at 37 almost 38

I am 37, almost 38. My partner will be 40 this fall. I have been off the pill for a year and TTC for 6 months. We had one failed IUI (with Letrozole) last cycle and am trying another IUI with more aggressive Menopur (no letrozole) this cycle. Have never tried Clomid. My husband’s count after wash is between 1-5 million, I guess this is low, with some but not great motility. I’ve never missed a period.

The RE doc said we should move right to IVF and skip IUI all together since doing any more IUI cycles could delay IVF treatment. But I’m finding that hard advice to follow.

We have an IVF consult set up this month but feeling like we should try at least 3 cycles of IUI with the most aggressive meds. The IUIs and IUI meds are 100% covered through insurance but IVF will be completely out of pocket.

I want to trust this physician but it is hard to navigate all the information he throws at us. It also seems like 3 IUIs is a standard number to try if you are under 35. I can’t figure that out for someone my age. My gut says do 3 cycles and then move on to IVF. It’s hard not to want to do 4 or 5 though since they are covered 100%

Any thoughts on how to navigate this decision process is appreciated!
