Can you drink coffee while breast feeding?

I haven’t drunk any while pregnant, AT ALL and so I really want after my baby is born to ask my husband to get me a white chocolate mocha from Starbucks 😩😩 ... so let’s further my question through the comments, can I like drink it and dump my breast milk like it were alcohol? (I don’t drink but I hear women do that all the time so I can’t imagine it being much different). I’m a FTM and Ive decided to not drink caffeine through my pregnancy just wondering how long I have actually committed. Planning to breastfeed for as long as possible btw

Please dont pump and dump, its a waste of your breast milk and not an actual thing to do. Your breastmilk will cycle through and rid itself of caffeine/alcohol. Feed your baby and follow it up with a coffee if your nervous and want enough time between feeding and drinking.

For me it was trial and error. I ended up not being able to drink caffeine while I was breastfeeding because it just made my son too fussy and gassy so I just switched to decaf and he was fine. Like others have mentioned there is no need to pump and dump and as long as you don’t over do it, you and baby should both be fine.

My OB and the lactation consultant I spoke with at the hospital said that coffee is fine. They did say something about how if I drink a lot of coffee baby might be restless, irritable or sleep poorly and that some babies are more sensitive than others. So I was told to watch baby to see how she reacted and then just utilize common sense. My daughter never seemed bothered by the coffee I drank in moderation (1-2 cups a day) so I just did what made me happy and got me through the weeks of barely any sleep.

If you're worried about affecting your kid (no way to know til you try, depends on the kid), you can easily just do decaf.

You can technically, but it can keep baby awake, give them reflux, or colic. So go easy. It takes a long time to clear from your body and passes through your milk.

So I was in the same boat and never had any during pregnancy. I asked my pediatrician at my son's first appointment because I breast feed. He said to give it a couple of weeks. But to drink a cup in the morning right after I feed. So most will be out of my system. He said he couldn't believe parents could function without it because we get so sleep deprived. You will know if it upsets your baby. Enjoy your coffee and congrats!

You definitely don’t need to pump and dump. Just don’t go overboard by drinking a strong coffee with every meal lol. If you start seeing it affect your baby once you’re breastfeeding, then cut back.

One cup a day is fine. Same with during your pregnancy.
