Question about squats

I’m trying to do 10-20 squats a day to help tone my butt, but I’m wondering if I’m doing them right because afterwards the tops of my thighs are sore and not my glute muscles?

I stand with my feet shoulder with apart, squat to the ground, hold for a bit, then stand back up.

On a personal note just want to vent about my pp weight loss. Baby #4, I’m 34 years old. I gained 40 pounds with each pregnancy and lost easily through breastfeeding. This time seems to be much harder to lose the weight, and I feel like I’m actually trying more to lose the weight more than I have before. I’m trying to eat high protein and exercising more, but I’ve only managed to lose about 33 pounds in 5 months. The last month I actually GAINED 3-4 pounds back even though I’m still EBF and don’t think I’m eating differently. So I’m trying to increase my water intake and exercise but it’s still so frustrating that I’m trying harder but not seeing results.
