I hate people.
Yesterday I was having an awful day. On my way to work my little sister calls me and tells me that our mom is in the hospital and that the doctors are saying that she may have pneumonia, bronchitis, and sepsis which is an infection in the blood that could lead to organ failure. I was so stressed out and worried that I cried the whole way to work. I get to work and I am shaking, I tell my boss about the situation and that if she gets worse I will have to go out there. I live in California and she lives in Nevada. He was totally understanding and said that they are here for me and was so nice about the situation. My hands are visibly shaking and my stomach feels like it is in my feet and I feel sick. Fast forward to 8:30pm and my night gets so much worse. I work at a pet store and this woman comes up to me and is standing next to the hamsters/small animals and begins to say “do you know anything about...” and I am smiling but started to shake my head no because I am a cashier and am frequently asked if I know anything about the lizards, Guinea pigs, etc. she continues to say “do you know anything about the cat food?” So i say “oh the cat food, yes! Did you have a question about the different brands?” And she gives me this awful, nasty look and walks away. So I called for a coworker to help her over in the cat food area and tell him what happened and how she walked away and I didn’t know if she still needed help. A few minutes later she comes to the register to check out and I say with a smile on my face “hi, do you have a phone number with us?” (The phone number is for a rewards program we have) and she stares at me, again with an awful, nasty look and says nothing. So I repeat myself because I was thinking “hmm maybe she didn’t hear me the first time.” So I ask again, still smiling. She continues to stare and me with a nasty look. So I just say “okaaay we can just skip that part then.” And she then says “it’s funny how people think that they can be rude to you and don’t expect people to be rude back to them. I tried to ask you for help and you couldn’t even help me.” So I say to her still smiling, “ I tried to help you...” and she cuts me off and says “no you didn’t. You started shaking your head no before I could even ask you anything.” So at this point I say nothing. I just stand there and smile while she continues to yell at me. She continues to say “ I’m just going to buy the cheapest cat food and go somewhere where people actually want to help me.” Etc saying I have terrible customer service. Her receipt prints out and I am still smiling, hand it to her and say “have a good night.” And she looks at me with a nasty look again and says “it’s have a good day, if you know ANYTHING about that.” She leaves and I am literally shaking and my heart is racing. It’s almost 9pm so I say have a good night but apparently that’s not what she wants me to say? So after this happens I go on my break and as I am walking to the break room I just break down in tears and start sobbing. I couldn’t believe how awful that lady was. I called my mom, crying and told her about what happened and to see how she was. My mom ended up being ok and all the tests came back negative and they just sent her home with medicine. I thought my mom had an infection in her blood that could lead to organ failure and might kill her and this lady at my job treated me awful and all I could do is smile. Moral of the story is: you never know what someone is going through so be kind, always.
