Need help, can’t really talk to my mom and feel awkward always asking my friends these questions.

Last summer (24 years old) I went to the gynecologist for my first exam / Pap smear and she said since I was a Virgin that she did not recommend to continue and to come back after I lost my v card. I didn’t want to question a doctor but all of my friends had their exams when they were around 18/ college time and I just assumed I was late to the club. Now a year later (25) , I am still a Virgin but have a long distance BF who I will be traveling/ working with in a few weeks so I’m plan on losing my v card soon HAHA my concern is should I get this done soon before I’m traveling full time and while I have access to my home doctor? I’m 25 and just feel way behind on everything in this category and mainly just want to make sure everything is good to go down there. I also don’t want to call and ask the receptionist at the office these questions and be awkward about it. Anything helps please!!
