Do you feel that Eliza and Elizabeth are the same/too similar? My husband and I both love the name Eliza but his sister’s name is Elizabeth (goes by Liz). Do you think it would be strange to name our daughter Eliza?

I don’t think it’s strange but she’ll probably think your naming the baby after her lol, we gave my daughter the middle name Nicole which is also my sisters middle name & it had nothing to do with her it just sounded good with my daughters name 🤷🏽‍♀️😂

Eliza can be short for Elizabeth but not necessarily considered naming the baby after her. I love the name Eliza and especially if your sil goes by Liz it sounds completely different to me. I would just talk to her and ask if she liked the name and see what she says.

My husband and nephews  name is Matthew. My husband goes by Matt and my nephew Matthew. My aunt has a brother named Dave and married a guy named Dave it gets a bit confusing which one my mom is talking about sometimes. My family has a lot of people with the same name by marriage and blood.

I should have read the whole post before voting! I voted that they are too similar because they are variants of the same name. Eliza originated as a nickname for Elizabeth. Wouldn’t work for sisters but I think it’s totally fine for niece and aunt!

I don’t think it’s weird, but I would keep in mind that whether your daughter would use a nickname down the road because I would think the nickname for Eliza would also be Liz. In that case it may be too close for comfort. Also, it depends if you want it to appear as though you named her after your sis-in-law. My husband and I liked the name Rylan for our daughter but my bro-in-law is Ryan. They are very similar names but I was more concerned of everything always thinking she was named after him. It was no offense to him, but I wasn’t naming her after him lol
