Periods after pregnancy

Has anyone else experienced significantly worse period cramps AFTER having a baby? Daughter is 2, I stopped nursing her 6 months ago and holy cow my periods have gotten so painful!! It almost feels like I am having full on contractions!! Is this normal?!?
