Counting pushes?

This might be a dumb question but...I just had my son a few days ago and the nurse told me I pushed 8 times for 20 mins.... but technically I pushed 24 times because I pushed 3 times per contraction. Is this always how the measure “pushes” it’s really how many contractions?

My nurses counted them by each set of pushes because you don’t really stop between pushes during the same contraction. You push, take a deep breath, push more, another deep breath, and push even harder-all of that counted as one push. Then you stop pushing until the next contraction.

Great question. I wondered this too. My OB said my son was out in 1 push and I was thinking "She's crazy. They were all just screaming at me to push again. That was 3 pushes not 1!" LOL. She told me basically counts by contraction, so mine really was considered 1 push

Also, your body and uterus does ALOT of the work. If you were to not push, it would take a while but baby would be pushed out by your contracting uterus.
