Just so you don’t scare yourself to death like I just did
So I live in the Midwest where we are in the middle of a heat wave. We have a 2 story house with the bedrooms on the 2nd floor. In the summer it’s always hotter upstairs, but I get used to it and don’t really notice it. Tonight I felt my baby and realized she felt warm. Took her temp underarm-98.7, not a fever but not far off so take it rectally, 100.2. I totally freak out thinking I need to rush to the ER soon if it goes up just a tiny bit more. Then it hits me I have her dressed in a long sleeve onesie, not super warm but not lightweight either. I undress her and take her downstairs where it’s cooler and retake her temp 15 mins later, rectally it’s in the 98.7-99.6 range, MUCH more normal. Monitored it for another 2 hours, and it stayed normal. Anyway, moral of the story, newborns can’t regulate their temp. Dress them appropriately and don’t assume they should always be bundled up when it’s already hot. Definitely had a little scare tonight, but thank the Lord it ended up being nothing!
