Need Organization Help!

My office/craft space is my least favorite space in the house. It’s the catch all for mail, papers, my to-do’s, odds and ends, and the things I “might need someday”. It’s meant to be the most inspiring room and somehow is the exact opposite. Over the years I’ve tried to find solutions to organize but the never ending projects leave me unsure how to best organize.

I’ve been wanting to start a small side business where I sew baby pants for cloth diapers and need a better setup.

I’m embarrassed by the mess but hoping it helps display my uncertainty in how to organize! I don’t like overpowering furniture so I don’t want a large bookcase or anything like that. I want the room to be functional, but those craft rooms you see on Pinterest overwhelm me so I want to minimize what I actually see in terms of my supplies.

Here is my side of the room:

Hubby and daughters mostly unused side:

Closet shelves where I keep fabric, hubbys extra clothes he won’t get rid of, manuals, recycle/shred bins, daughters school stuff in the pink bin, text books, and our safe with important docs.

This has some of my books, unfinished sewing projects, external hard drive, mod podré, pins, scissors, needles, embroidery attachment for sewing machine, etc.

Under desk are shelves currently for old pictures, printer paper, etc. Printer sits on the floor.

Other shelf normally holds fabric, cards, cables in the boxes, and envelopes.

Thread on the wall, u finished projects, fabric scraps, paper crafting supplies, twine/elastic/fiberfill/binding tape, etc.

My desk is the drop off for all papers that need to be taken care of or hung onto (bills, coupons, business cards, etc.).

The drawers in my desk have other office supplies like paper clips, laminating sheets, file folders, dividers, photo maulers, sewing manual, etc.

I know there has to be a better solution.

I’ve considered some shelving I’ve seen at World Market or IKEA. Either shelves or peg board type things. I also plan to check Hobby Lobby and Amazon this week.

Largely, I need to have a better system for:

- projects in progress

- completed items I intend to sell

- papers to do something with versus those to file away

- book storage

- photo storage (for pictures I am using for ongoing scrapbook project)

- sentimental cards that I want to always keep

- travel trinkets (currently on the shelf in the hubby side picture that I could maybe use for something else)
