I just got my first car, yay! What are some good things to have in it? So far I have a first aid kit  and starting cables.

Your registration and insurance. Always have the roadside assistance phone number and your customer/membership number handy. If you don't have it, get one. Preferably something that can be used nationwide. (In US and Canada, there is AAA/CAA. Also good because can be used for any car you are in so if you are riding with a friend and break down, still covered. But ubers probably not)

I keep a spare set of clothes, some snacks that won’t go bad easily like granola bars, a couple of water bottles, a blanket, paper towels, hand sanitizer, and a small set of tools, flashlight, tire pressure gauge, phone charger, first aid kit. My first car was junk and broke down a lot so I learned to keep enough stuff that if something happened I’d be good.

You'll probably also need a car charger for your phone, and a car mount to put your phone in. My car is suuuuuper old, so it doesnt have a fancy radio or bluetooth capabilities. I have an aux cable.

I keep a roll of paper towels under my seat and a pack of baby wipes just in case of spills and whatnot. Also a bottle of hand sanitizer because I cannot deal with touching money or the gas pump lol

Spare tire, windshield washing fluid, brush/scraper (we get a lot of snow), blanket. I like to keep my shopping bags in there so it’s one less thing to remember. Maybe a bottle of water?

My father gets a little over zealous when it comes to my safety. When I got my car he got me a full blown survival kit for it. We live in suburban NJ but he acts like we live in the wilderness.
I have:
Tire and jack (came with the car but always make sure your extra tire is ok)
Emergency road kit (flares, jumper cables, etc) all come in the one kit so it’s easy. My dad added a few different tools to it like an Allen wrench set, Phillips’s and flathead screwdrivers etc. for basic car issues
A window breaker and seat belt cutter that stay in the glove box.
A Swiss Army knife.
Extra lug nuts for your tires in case any fall off or get lost (also in glove box)
A breaker bar to replace said lug nuts (stays in a pocket of my driver side door in case I need to use it as a weapon 👍)
A charged power bank for your phone and extra charging cables.
I also keep my super old gps unit in the glove box if my phone can’t be used.
Some pens and pencils, a sharpie marker, a scratch pad, napkins or tissues, and hand sanitizer. 
And the super extra paranoid dad stuff is:
A special bug out style bag with a below zero blanket, socks, and gloves. A fire starter, emergency candles, water, and survival food. I even have a flare gun 🙄. I’m pretty sure if he could get his hands on some scuba gear I’d have that too.
