Famous books not living up to the hype

Ever read a ‘critically acclaimed’, ‘life changing’, ‘classic’, ‘defining voice of a generation’ type book, only to think it was garbage?

What book have you read which you’ve ended up going ‘meh’ at the end, but that everyone else seems to rave about?

For me, it was the Great Gatsby. Read it recently on holiday, and I can’t believe this is taught in schools as a ‘classic’. The story in itself is rubbish, the dialogue is clunky, the characters aren’t likeable or believable and the ending doesn’t even make any sense any way. Yet it’s part of national curriculum. I don’t get it *shakes head*
