Do you think catfishing should be a crime

Most people who catfish are lonely, bored, want revenge, low self esteem, etc which is understanding but it’s also messed up. I was reading an article wrote by the weekly and they made a new episode

I have been catfished before when I was 13 by a grown man pretending to be a child the same age as me. The police got involved and the guy disappeared without telling me. I don’t understand how sexting and cyber-bullying, scams, etc is a crime but faking a profile for devious reasons (scams, kidnapping, revenge,etc) isn’t illegal yet. It should of been illegal a long time ago.

Yes it should be because it is a form of identity theft. But depending on details is if it should be serious or not. 
1.) is it an older person trying to use cat fishing to lure a child
2.) how far are these people going to take on someone else’s identity; even something as small as it being slanderous 
3.) if money is being sent to them
4.) if there’s a set up for kidnapping plan or other dangerous things

I’m against it in any form for obvious reasons. We’ve had catfishers on here-regulars who claim to be someone else than they are. As far as if they should be charged with a crime, it just depends on what they did. Was there financial gain? Then yes. If they claimed to be someone else and took advantage of the empathy of others, that’s emotional abuse and it’s a shitty thing to do, and they deserve to be caught and called out. But do they deserve to do time in prison just for that?

The same thing happened to me and yes it should definitely be illegal because at the i was 13 and I thought I was talking to a 14 yr old boy I sent nudes which I realize now was stupid because the man turned out to be 30 something. He should of been charged with some sex crime because that’s pedophila.  It happens to a lot of girls.

Otherwise, no. Lying isn’t illegal. It’s a gross thing to do, but I don’t want the government policing morality that way.

cat fishing is technically not “bad” and shouldn’t be illegal until it comes to something dangerous (assault or kidnapping etc). when it comes to that, charges are filed for the actual offense.
