In your experience, how painful was the insertion process of an IUD?

I’m getting the Mirena IUD inserted tomorrow, and I’m really scared. I’ve seen some people say it’s the worst pain they’ve ever felt and others say it’s not bad at all. What was your personal experience, and what should I do to prepare? Any comments are greatly appreciated as I’m extremely nervous and would like some input.

Mine was the worst pain I have ever felt in my life. I am not over exaggerating. I cried and continued to cry for weeks after from so much cramping and pain. I ended up getting it taken out because it was messing with my day to day life and I couldn’t take it anymore. The insertion takes 5-10 min and it’s all painful, the doctor said it’s like contractions. Anyways everyone’s different so I guess it depends on the person but here’s my story.

It really depends! I found it to be bearable but my ob/gyn gave me medication to loosen my cervix to allow easier insertion. My uterus is not angled differently or anything so that probably helped as well. I did however throw up after the insertion, mostly from the meds and/or having a foreign object put into you (it's normal to feel dizzy for a few min) otherwise, I'd say things went great. 
PS: Pro tip, RELAX AS MUCH AS POSSIBLE. The more you freak and tense up, the harder it will be for everyone and the more painful it will be for you. My ob/gyn said to sink my butt down and relax it "into the sand like you're on the beach". Helped me so much. 
In my honest opinion, it's worth it. Like a piercing: kinda sucks at first but you'll soon realize it was a good idea. :) I hope this helped you calm down a little bit! Hope all goes well.

It depends on your body. I have a tipped uterus so it was more painful for me but my doctor knew and tried to make it as bearable as possible.

I honestly didn’t think the insertion was that bad. The cramps afterwards killed though. The doctor walked me through the process. The process was super quick which surprised me. Immediately after the procedure I felt super good. I was honestly surprised that it didn’t hurt more because I had hear horror stories. And I didn’t cramp really until I got home (about 20 minutes). Those killed. I’d definitely recommend taking it easy afterwards. Relax in your pjs with some ice cream and Netflix
My doctor recommended I take ibuprofen the entire day leading up to my appointment which I think helped. Then I took ibuprofen afterwards and until the pain was bearable/went away
I’d honestly do it again. I got the copper iud so I’m covered for like 10 years and no hormones which I really like. I was super nervous like you, but I’m super glad I went through with it. You got this!!
