questions on filing a police report for sexual assualt
Someone i know attempted rape on me on Saturday. I wasn’t going to file a report or anything, but I told my roommate (who is very good friends with him) and she told me he has a history of being frisky with her personally as well as one other girl they both know.
I called some NYPD hotline and someone took down my info and story and now they’ve assigned me to a detective who I will be meeting with in a few days.
I don’t think I will press charges, because I’m about to move out of the country and can’t stick around for court dates (nor do I want to do put myself in that situation). I wanted to file a police report so its on record.
The way the detective spoke made me think she assumed I wanted to press charges. I told her I just wanted to file a police report, and she said I could also do that only if I wanted. Is a detective normally the person you file a report with? It seems like we jumped a step here and I should be talking to a police officer to file the report.
Also - I read online that usually police reports dont “do” anything, but its up to their discretion whether they themselves want to follow through and press charges, especially if the person has a few reports filed against them. Could that be why it’s being bumped to a detective?
