Is meningitis contagious?

Yesterday and past week or so I've being meeting my friend with her baby last night her baby got rushed to hospital it's meningitis I don't know if this is a stupid question but is it? I'm really worried about my friends baby but of course mine too!

Meningitis just refers to the swelling of the brain and spinal tissues (meninges). Viral and bacterial infections can cause this swelling, as well as other reasons, like injury.  All can make you very sick, but the worst and most likely to be lethal is bacterial meningitis and both viral and bacterial types are contagious. Definitely be vigilant for symptoms for you and your child.

Yes it is contagious. I had bacterial meningitis 5 years ago and was in isolation. No one could enter the room without gloves, mask everything to cover themselves.

Meningitis is a symptom. So, no...meningitis is not contagious. A bacterial or viral infection could possibly lead to meningitis, however, we all respond differently to infections, so while a certain infection could cause meningitis in one person, it may not necessarily cause it in another person
