broken water, 18 hr labor, & infection in placenta

Olivia

okay! it’s been over a month since i gave birth. i’m 17 years old so i don’t have a lot of time between figuring my life out and having a brand new baby, lol.

my labor started 20 minutes after my boyfriend had dropped me back off at my house from a date. i was 38 weeks. he hadn’t even made it home yet. i was eating some noodles when all of the sudden, i peed myself! or so i thought. i decided to wait to see if anything else would come out and oh man, it did. i could not stop gushing water. i woke my mom up and we headed to the hospital.

once they confirmed it was my water, i had to walk around for an hour and a half to get contractions started. this did not work. i was having very small contractions, i just could not feel them and they were not getting any stronger. this is when they started me on pitocin. things were still going slow but i eventually got contractions big enough to have the epidural!

from here, things started to go downhill. after the epidural, i started to vomit and shake... a lot. i could barely keep my eyes open. my blood pressure had dropped DANGEROUSLY low. every time i had a contraction, my baby’s heartstrings would drop a little bit. the nurses discovered that they gave me too much epidural given my height and size. they had to cut it off completely. no pain reliever. this was awful. it was long and painful. i thought i was going to die. i hadn’t dilated in 2 hours. doctors were talking about an emergency c section.

but finally my blood pressure stabilized and i was able to have the epidural again. they gave me more pitocin and things started picking up.

after 17 hours of labor, i felt pressure. it felt like something was in my vagina, to be honest. the doctor came in and told me it was time to push. but i was exhausted. i was falling asleep in between contractions. i just couldn’t do it. i had been through hell.

so, the doctor had to bring the vacuum out. by this point, her heart rate was dropping significantly with every push. we needed to get her out fast. i pushed as hard as i could and with the help of the vaccum, she was out. little did we know, the cord was wrapped around her neck.

before i could even look at her, the doctor unwrapped the cord and everyone told me to look up. there she was. i’ll never forget that moment. pure joy and love.

after that unfortunately, we discovered i had an infection in my placenta that had spread to me and her. i was on an iv for 24 hours. (hell, i had to call every time i needed to use the bathroom) and she had to stay in the nicu for 5 days after i had been sent home. that was the hardest part. i just wanted her home.

overall, it was a very hard and long labor but i wouldn’t have had it any other way. i’m so happy my beautiful girl is here! never felt so much love ❤️
