Waking a very sleepy premie to eat

Laurie

My baby boy was born at 35 weeks on July 20th. After an extended stay in the hospital for some breathing concerns and cyanosis, we are finally home and trying to settle in. We are really struggling with feedings though. He just refuses to wake up. We’ve tried everything from tickling his feet, stripping him down, changing his diaper, wiping him with a wet washcloth, and blowing in his hair to get him to wake up when it’s time to eat. The pediatrician suggested putting breastfeeding on hold until he gets his weight back up, since he was responding better to a bottle and would at least dream feed with that. Now, he isn’t even enticed by the bottle. He will only take about an ounce at a time and it is such a struggle to get him to wake up enough to do that. I’m worried that he’s losing too much weight. We will be calling the pediatrician first thing in the morning, but in the meantime, any suggestions for getting him to wake up and feed?
