Epidural wears off?

I didn’t know it was possible for epidurals to wear off during labor 😩😫

I asked the anesthesiologist this because I heard some women say it stopped working when they went to push. He said some OBs like to shut it off without telling you so you'll push faster but not freak out. It's a continuous drip.

I’ve been told by multiple doctors and nurses that they often shut off or allow the epidural to ware off right before they start asking you to push. An OB on YouTube (granted take it with a grain of salt) explained in her video that a good epidural doesn’t actually take away all the pain of contractions but just lessens the pain to a tolerable amount so that you can still feel enough to push properly.

With my oldest I remember calling the nurse in telling her I needed her to turn up my epidural...she told me she had turned it down for me to push, and it was definitely time to push which is why I was in so much pain. Made for a quick delivery though!! I actually think it was perfect timing.

An epidural is given like a catheter in the sense that it remains hooked up (so to speak) and as it gradually wears off you can hit a button and administer more of the medication. It is programmed so you can’t give yourself too much but allows you to decide when you need another dose. With that being said, if you’re delivering vaginally you won’t want to be 100% numb because you probably won’t be able to tell when you’re pushing lol totally speaking from experience on that one!
