What would you do? (Moral dilemma)
Hi everyone! Currently almost 38 weeks with my first.
My husband and I are in a less than ideal financial situation. We’re making it, but barely. Mostly off of our savings. I’m planning on going back to work ASAP.
My Aunt mentioned something to me about contributing to a college fund for my son. I told her I thought this was an awesome idea, but that nothing has been set up yet (as in no account for him).
A few weeks go by, and I get a check for $1,000 in the mail from her, with a card addressed to my son and welcoming him into the world. My husband and I were ecstatic, because we could use the money. Then I remembered my Aunt talking about the college fund.
My husband said we should put the check into our account because the money is going to be spent on him regardless, for essentials like diapers and clothes. I said that if my Aunt gave us the money for a college fund, it isn’t ours to spend, and we shouldn’t cash the check until we have an account set up.
I’m planning on asking my Aunt what she intended the check for and honoring that. What would you do?
