SSI responsibilities ?

I want to get an opinion on something somebody said to me. If a child whose parent passed away and they get ssi is the money supposed to sit in an account and be saved or used to take care of that child?

I'd save it unless I needed it, in which case I would use it to help pay bills.

Is supposed to be used to care for the child.  My mom used mine as child support. My cousins mom however, put hers away in savings and it paid for my cousins college.  My dad died of brain cancer,  hers was disabled.

Its all situational I’d think. Hopefully when a parent leaves behind a young child they have things like savings, life insurance, mortgage insurance and a bunch of assets so money is able to be saved. Or they have left the child in the hands of a loved one that is prepared to financially provide for that child.

It’s to take care of the child, and if some can be saved, great. It’s to make up for the loss of support the parent provided the child.

I think it depends.  I think if it is used for the child it is ok.  Its not for the parent to go get their hair done and etc.  Its for the child, so if they buy school supplies or save some for college ok.  It should be used for that child one way or another

The money is meant to help cover the expenses for you child. I try to save as much of it as I can, but I will use it for diapers, doctors bills, and other things like that if I need to.

Isnt SSI for the particular person? Not necessarily  for the children? Example  parents are deaf,  they die.... their children are hearing they dont have a disability , so they don't get ssi.

I think it depends on the situation... when my father in law passed away my husbands two younger siblings starting getting money and my MIL used it for caring for them. She didn’t have a job because my FIL was the one who worked. I think if your financially okay enough to save it that’s great but everyone has a different situation so there’s no right or wrong answer to this.

It’s situational. If you can afford to care for the child, save what you can. But it is for taking care of the child, if they need it now they need it now.

It depends, my aunt is a widow and I believe she saved my cousins SSI. I don't think he was even 12 when it happened, and an only child, she was also still working and financially stable.
