Becoming your mom/dad
I feel like I hear that saying all the time about girls growing up and inevitably becoming just like their mothers. What do you think of this statement? Does it ring true for you?
In my opinion I think it relates more to just growing up in general and especially becoming a parent, as you once might have been a rebellious teen and then have children of your own and find yourself telling your kids not to do things the same way your mom did, and saying “omg, I sound just like my mom.”
At the same time, the way my mom parented me is in a lot of ways what I am actively trying to avoid in my own parenting style, so if you didn’t get along with your mom, or disagreed with her way of thinking/behaving, can you decide not to be like her as an adult? Or is the saying right? Whatever we do, we become our moms anyway?
Then it got my thinking, why does no one ever say boys end up just like their fathers? Do you think that statement is any more or less accurate than girls “becoming” their moms?
