Myth, Or Not?

Question

I’ve always heard that having a cat in the house with an infant is hard. One of my biggest fears is that a cat will try and smother my child. Has anyone else had this problem? Tell me about your stories with infants and cats.

We have two cats and my cats are best friends with my 19 month old . Even when she was a newborn they were super gentle  and were just observant . They never tried to or have hurt our daughter.

I have 2 cats, they are 10 & 11 years old and a 3 year old and 4 month old.  We also have a dog that’s 7 years old. One cat we hand raised as he was orphaned at a few days old, as well as the dog. Molly we adopted and she was almost 2. Our cat Jacob,  doesn’t care for loud things so he hides from the 3 year old. He does let him pet him, but that cat is scared of air. Now Molly and the 3 year old are great. He loves her. She loves all baby things, laying in the car seat and bouncy chair. 
With all pets you need to be vigilant because babies can hurt them especially when they start grabbing and pulling. Teach the baby to pet “softly” and be “gentle”. Also, keep litter box in a place that the baby has no access to. If you can do the same with the food and water bowls. As a baby, my first son loved to splash in the water bowl and eat dog food.

From when me son was a newborn to 6 months we lived in my moms house with 14 cats. None of them even bothered with my son, they all where honestly scared of him, wouldn’t even approach him. Then we moved into our own place, I took one cat with me. He’d approach the baby, sniff him, lay next to him, but never tried to smother, as soon as my son would move he’d jump up and step away from him. 
Now my sons almost 2, and we’ve gathered 3 more cats, making it a total of 4 (cat lady runs in my genes 🤦‍♀️) my one older obese cat likes to lay in bed with my son, the others still avoid him. I’m due in December with another boy, I have no worries about the cats. I guess being a big cat person I just feel more confident in trusting them and knowing their ways, I always tell people that most the time the cats won’t even bother with baby’s, and if they do all you have to do is teach them boundaries.

I grew up with cats. My parents have many pictures of me as a baby sleeping soundly with the cat nearby. 
You teach cats boundaries as needed, and when the kiddo grows and gains awareness, you teach them how to interact with pets safely and respectfully.
