Am I being overprotective ?

My 4 year old niece is living with my grandma in a different state. My mom has a female friend that really likes my niece. She’ll often times hangout with her one on one without my mom there. I don’t know why but this makes me feel uncomfortable, and I plan on telling my mom that I don’t want her to be alone without her there. I know I’m not my niece’s mom but something feels off.

Your grandmother has a female friend who I assume is within the same age as your grandmother? If this is the case, perhaps then the female friend is missing the joy of being close to a child. Perhaps she is missing the years when she raised her own and now they are grown and off living their lives and so she finds simple joy with spending time with a little one again. It all comes back full circle...often when we are amidst raising our children and racing through life, we blink and the time has flown..as time goes by, we find ourselves older and at a point where we can actually enjoy the simple things, without the pressures of the world folding in on us..coloring with a child, seeing the world through their eyes, their innocence keeps the evils of the world at a balance. Perhaps you might try to learn a little bit more about this friend so you then can have a clearer picture. Also, consider that your grandmother is raising the child, and as such, she might need help from time to time, like most people do. Is it really so far fetched to think that rather than this woman deciding single handedly that she wants to hang out with a child, she might have been asked or even offered her help to your grandmother? Perhaps in being a friend, your grandmother has spoken to her about her own personal struggles raising a child, and thus the friend has decided to help out? There is always more to the picture we see. I understand your concerns, and if I were you, I would try to learn about this woman first, and then from there you can still see if it doesn’t sit well with you. And if it does not, well then, a heart to heart is in order with your grandmother. Just a different perspective for you to consider.
