If I am incarcerated while pregnant with suffer a miscarriage due to improper medical care and almost die. Do I have the right to sue the county that is responsible?
I was picked up for unauthorized use of a motor vehicle. I borrowed a family members car and didn't take it straight back to them because I was trying to get away from a dangerous situation. I was booked into the county jail. They do pregnancy tests on all female intakes to categorize the placement in the jail. I knew I was pregnant though, 11 weeks. The pregnant women are placed with drug addicts coming down of their high. I was placed with a heroin addict that was extremely volatile. I was attacked by this woman and started bleeding soon after. I was left on the floor of my cell writhing in pain. I told them I was miscarrying and bleeding too much. I soaked 18 sanitary pads in less than 12 hours. I was taken to the hospital and released back to the jail. They had to take me back a second time and when they did my blood pressure was 80/40 and the nurses immediately started me on an IV. I was told that I may have to have a hysterectomy and I'm 30 at the time. The second time they took me to the hospital wasn't until the infirmary doctor made them do it. Before that I was placed in solitary confinement while I soaked all the pads they gave me and was ignored by the officers. I called the jail nurse from my cell and she made fun of me and I begged someone to help me but they all ignored me until I became panicked and called my family to contact the jail admin. I was hospitalized for a week because of the severity of the miscarriage.
