Is it still ok to name my daughter Alexa after Amazon co-opted it?

I’ve loved the name Alexa since childhood. I’ve always dreamed of having a daughter with that name but I have huge reservations since Amazon stole the name for their Echo. Just looking for feedback.

Name your kids whatever you want! If you've had your heart set on a name dont change it because of a store. They still may change that in the future.

At least Alexa was a normal name before Amazon. I know someone who named their child Siri... not kidding. Not short for anything either. Just... Siri.

Sure there might be a few jokes early on but it will probably pass by the time she is old enough to care. I doubt amazon Alexa will be around more then 10 years, our technology changes too fast.

My niece is named Alexa and they had to do something so that their echo doesn’t respond to the name “Alexa” every time someone says it 😂

I read something the other day about how often people make dumb jokes to people named Alexa—like ordering them around and then laughing like it’s so funny and original to order them around. I don’t think I’d want to name my kid a name that would cause so many people to initiate that kind of interaction with my child on an everyday basis. Seems demeaning/obnoxious.

I wouldn’t. I did - when it wasn’t very popular yet, I didn’t think it would be a big deal- and people are so rude. I’ve met many other parents of Alexas at this point. Some older girls are in counseling as they’re treated like servants at school. They’re coming out with Alexa frames so “Alexa can sit on your face” cue sexual harassment. It’s embarrassing. I could go on. I had the name picked out well before Amazon used it too, and I regret naming my child that. Her name has been legally changed from Alexa now. With the way people bully others from behind their screens, I was fearful as to how it would impact her as she went through her formative years.

I never considered this association. I am considering using Alexa for a girls name either first or middle as its kind of a version of my maiden name Alexander.
