Tips to tame/calm a feral kitten?
We found a kitten at my work today that is probably around 3 months old. Very skinny and my work is on a major highway, so a few guys helped me catch him. He is very wild and scared (I received a few bites and scratches while trying to pick him up the first time, and later when putting him in his cage at my home) which I don’t blame him if he has been on his own for a while.
I live in the country on 10 acres so I took him home with me. I have one outdoor/barn cat now and figured he would like it here as well. I don’t expect him to ever be as tame as my current cat, but I’d hopefully like to tame/calm him enough that he at least stays here to be taken care of.
I currently have him in a large cage as I don’t trust him to not destroy my bathroom. He has a litter box, bed, food/water and a couple toys. I figured i could start by just sitting with him every time I feed him and a few other times during the day so he gets used to me. Once he calms down enough and not trying to escape when I put in food I could move on to trying to pet him.
I have had several pets growing up (cats and dogs) and even worked at a vets as a kennel assistant, but have never taken on a slightly feral pet before. Again I don’t expect him to ever be a house cat but I’d like him to be tame enough that he knows he is safe here, and stays around to be fed/watered and maybe on occasion petted but if not that is fine. Any tips greatly appreciated please.
