Are newborn cloth diapers necessary?

FTM planning on using BumGenius 5.0 for our LO (they seem to be the best rated brand that is available in Canada, but open to hearing other suggestions!)
I am wondering if newborn specific cloth diapers are really necessary or if the one size diapers will be fine?

I bought two dozen newborn prefolds from cloth-eez and a few of their newborn cloth-eez covers (all from Green Mountain Diapers). It will cost less than a few weeks or months (depending on size of baby) of newborn disposable diapers. My 1st baby was thin and long - 8 lbs - and the one sized diapers were way too big until about 6-8 weeks old.
With these prefolds you would need to prep them, as they’re cotton, so it would be difficult to wait until baby is born to try them out. The nice thing about them is that we have another baby on the way and our newborn diapers are paid for and ready to go.

It is hard to tell until they are born. My first two would have only for NB CD for about a month or so. My third did fit them for about 4 months as she is very petit. I did not buy mine until o had my third and I’m hoping I can use them for a while with my fourth. I bought them second hand and because of that they were hardly used at a fraction of the price. I think I paid $60 for a complete set including washing soap.

I don’t have that specific diaper brand but I use cloth. I had a big baby so even if I hadbpught the newborn diapers she would have fitted in them barely a month 🤷🏼‍♀️ i don’t have that kind of money so I just used disposables until she could use the one size.

I would say either just use an eco friendly disposable or when he's born try out the one size and if they don't fit buy some newborn, and just keep a small pack of disposable on hand

Wondering the same! I don’t want to spend money on newborn sized ones so may just use disposables for the first few weeks if the brands I have don’t fit just right.

I found nb cloth diapers a necessity.   My son didnt fit the one size till about 3-5 months old.   Personally not happy with bumgenius diapers.  I gave them away.

I bought 36 newborn diapers because I was told you can go through up to 12 a day and that way I'd only have to wash them every 3 days. My daughter was born at 7lb 1oz. We used the newborn diapers for two weeks 🙄. I was so pissed. My husband was the one who switched to a size one because he could no longer hold the flaps together with one hand. I was mad. But the bigger diapers absorbed more and we went from 8-10 diaper changes in a day to 5. So I stopped using the newborn size as well. The size one were a bit big at first, but we just got creative at folding them. So personally, I wouldn't really recommend newborn unless your baby is born and is totally tiny. I think I would get the size one and prep them right away by boiling and washing them. You know you'll use them for many months. Then I'd maybe buy some newborns closer to due date and leave them unopened until baby is here. Try how the size one fit, if you're unhappy with it, prep the newbies, if you like the bigger ones, return the small. We did continue using the newborn ones as doublers for night time when she started sleeping longer, so not a complete waste. But you can just use two size ones, it'll just be bulkier. I do absolutely recommend getting at least two newborn size covers. They will still stretch over the size one diaper, but the leg holes will be smaller to keep a tight seal. I still use my newborn covers at 8 months, I use bigger ones for the bulky night diapers. The small cover will ensure you won't get leaks even if the size one seems too big for your baby. Babies are basically logs at first. Swaddle them and they stay as they are. They won't care about a big looking butt. When the diapers were too long for my girl's butt, I just folded the diaper in at the back so there's a flap covering her butt crack. Kept poop in the flap, not letting it come out the back. Try this trick. We never got blowouts and she's a vigorous pooper. Another thing I have to say about size one. The label says up to 15 lbs. My daughter is 18lbs still wearing ones with twos as night time. Twos are enormous, super long. But the combo of size two and size one can now last me 12+ hours for those days when she sleeps particularly well 😄. We bought the toddler size snappies and switched to them probably at 4 months. They're just so much easier to use. Sorry for the long tirade. I've just loved my cloth journey and I love sharing tips. If you have any questions ever, feel free to message me.

Here's my experience with newborn cloth. I bought about 40 used newborn diapers. I spent $100. I was so excited to use them but my baby at 7lbs 14oz was too big for them. Not size wise but she leaked through them in less than an hour everytime. But the one size diapers were too big around her little legs. Her pee would come right out of the leg gaps. 
So I sold the newborn diapers and got $100 for them and used disposable newborn diapers until she grew into the one size. It only took a couple of months. 
My friend used her newborn diapers for months. Her son fit in them for awhile and she got a lot of use out of them.

My boy is 3 months old and has been in NB cloth since a few days old and he will fit in then until he’s about 6 months and then he will be in the one size. Ive saved money using cloth instead of disposables for 6 months plus that’s a lot of nappies in landfill over a 6 month period ! X
