What made you want to learn sign language?

Question

When I was young I didn't start talking until the age of 5. I could hear perfectly fine, I just wouldn't talk. My mom ended up teaching me sign language which I still use today. Though I wasn't verbal I was still able to express my needs through signing. When I did start talking, I couldn't get the words out right so I had to go to speech class to help me. I finally graduated from speech class the end of my 5th grade year.
What made you guys want to learn sign language?

I think sign language should be a mandatory class in schools and I plan on learning it myself soon :)

I thought it was more interesting than the other 5 or 6 languages being offered at my high school and we had to take two years of any language classes. I had also been dealing with my "mom" trying to make me take Spanish because on her side we have family that are Spanish and Guatemalan. I'm a bit stubborn so I chose ASL. After the first week I loved it and decided to take it for all four years. I love the culture, the way people express themselves, the art, and being able to interpret for others when I see someone who is trying to order something at a restaurant or shopping at a store. It has been extremely useful and I've helped so many people because of it. I was in the ASL honor society and graduated high school with a Laurent Clerc medallion and honors cord. At the graduation we signed the national anthem, it was such an amazing experience. When I worked at Disney World I saw another cast member who was deaf and she was using a notebook to communicate with guests. I visited her once a week on my off time while I was there just to chat and help for a short bit if needed. She said I was the best part of her week. I plan to teach my children ASL when they are little as I think there are tons of benefits from it 😊

I have a younger sister with downs. It took her years in speech therapy to learn to talk. So she communicated to us by using sign language. I learned sign language with my mom and brother so we could know what she was trying to tell us. I taught all 3 of my own children some signs when they were babies so they could communicate to me before they could talk. My 2.5 year old still will sign please when she wants something even though she speaks very well. Haha!

I’d love to learn sign language. That way, I’d be able to communicate with everyone, especially if one day I meet someone who has impaired hearing

My little brother is autistic and non verbal and his school teaches him sign language and i wanted to learn so i can communicate with him since no one else in our family knows it.

I went to a college that's partnered with the National Technological Institute for the Deaf and Hard of Hearing. It was a huge part of the culture there, even if you could hear, and my freshman year roommate was HoH. One of my close friends also has a cochlear implant, so sometimes we sign to one another, though it's usually dumb stuff.
