First or last name?!
Hi ladies! So I am in college to be a secondary school teacher and I was just wanting your opinions on this...
I’ve observed a few classrooms and the teachers have always introduced me as Miss Last Name. Which, being a student for so many years, sounds very foreign to me. I’ve had students that have asked me for help by calling me by my last name and I hardly recognize they’re speaking to me. I’m never called by my last name.
Plus, I just really hate my last name 🤷🏽♀️
Also, I’m not married right now, but am set to be married the year after I start teaching and plan on changing my last name. So basically I’d be working my first year as my maiden name, but then have my fiancé‘s last name my second year of teaching. I feel like it would just be a hassle.
I’ve never heard this being brought up before, so I’m wondering if it’s “okay” if I just go by Miss First Name instead. I know it would be weird if I ever had a student with the same name as me, but where I live, my first name is very uncommon. It’s not found on keychains or anything 🤷🏽♀️
I’m just wondering what you all think. I know going by your last name is supposedly out of respect, but if I went by my first name I feel like I would still be respected in using my first name. Just wanting to know your opinions. Especially if you are a parent, would you feel alright with your child calling their teacher by their first name or not?
I know it’s not normal (or at least in this part of the US it isn’t), but I just feel like it would be less of a hassle for me and the students.
Thank you!!
