Throwing fits?

Is your 1 year old throwing fits yet? Mine just started like last week and I don’t know what to do? She gets so frustrated if she can’t do something or doesn’t get her way or doesn’t get picked up in time, she will just start crying and screaming. How are you effectively disciplining your 1 year old?

I read an article that said little ones don’t throw real tantrums until 15-18 months or something like that (but I don’t know really it was just something I read). Right now they do it because they don’t know how to express their frustration or anger and they are learning. But I tell him no and explain why and then I just let him finish crying (show him that acting that way doesn’t get him what he wants) and then he starts crying for me and will hug me and I hug him and then he is completely over it.

I feel like he’s been throwing tantrums since 10ish months 😂 I ignore him though and it works well. He walks away and stops crying

I highly recommend the book No Drama Discipline, which was written by two child psychologists and was a life changer for me when my now 2.5 year old started throwing tantrums. It offers very practical information and strategies for understanding and dealing with a toddler, and when I started implementing the suggestions it had an immediate effect. I especially love that there is absolutely no judgement in the book - the authors fully recognize that all parents are human and therefore will not always put our best foot forward, and that toddlers can be full-on terrorists at times!! My husband and I have both read it now and I will be gifting it to all new mothers in my life.

Yes lol. Mine throws herself backwards when she’s pissed. She’s dramatic 🤣😩

Yeah, mine gets upset and collapses and cries if I don’t hold his hand to help him walk around. I usually ignore and he stops after 15 seconds or so.

We give him a hug and try and help him work through his frustrations. Usually it’s not about what he’s getting or not getting, it’s he’s frustrated with something like he’s not tall enough to reach something and can’t talk to express himself. As he’s hitting mile stones he’s having less tantrums.

At that age redirecting is the best option. When they are mad you explain "Oh I know that's so frustrating that you want to do XYZ but unfortunately you can't and I'm sorry" then redirect. So you're explaining what emotion they are feeling and then distracting them with something else. At that age they can be redirected very easily.

We’ve had tantrums since she started walking just shy of 10 months. The sass is real with this one. As for discipline, we have a “naughty” chair, she gets her hand tapped and told no, redirected a lot and we talk her through how we should do things. It feels like a lost cause most of the time but know that consistency in the end will make a big difference.

I feel like my son has been throwing fits since he was like 8 months 🙄🙄 I hope it won’t get worse.
