Do you turn up your thermostat when you leave and no one will be home?

I feel like it’s a common thing not to want to cool a house no one will be in for 8-12 hours. My husband thinks it should always be 70-73. I feel like that’s a huge waste of energy/money. 
He leaves the house after I do, so I can’t control it. We also can’t put in a system that has mobile control because we are in a rental plus just don’t have that kind of money. 
I used to turn the system all the way off but I realized that’s not best either, but I don’t think turning it up to 77-79 is unreasonable. I am the first one home after work anyways, and I’m fine with that temp. I would turn it down before he got home.

If we’re going on vacation we turn it up but just in the regular day no. It takes more energy to bring it back down to the temp you want it after having it high all day and I personally don’t want to come home to a hot ass house after a long day🤷🏻‍♀️

You have to really think about the overall energy use. If its a 5 day vacation, it may make sense to turn up thermostat (from 72 to 78 e.g.). Otherwise, if its just during the workday, it may take more energy to lower temp from 78 to 72, rather than just letting the temp be 72 all day long. Depends how efficient your hvac system is and when it runs.

You should leave it at 72. Otherwise the system will over work it’s self and burn out trying to cool down a hot house. EVERYTHING will hold the heat and take longer to cool down then maintaining a constant temperature

We leave ours at 68 all the time. Unless we’re gonna be gone a couple days and we set it at 70. We live in Texas so it’s super hot right now so we leave ours at 68 so it feels good when we get home from work.

If I don’t turn it on when we get home it’s around 81 or higher most of the time and that’s far too hot. I think we need our insulation checked because it gets boiling hot after 20 minutes of the air being off. When we’re out it stays on because someone is bound to come home within 3 hours

I didn’t read the description and voted wrong. If we’re on vacation in the summer we turn it up to 80, or down to 60 in the winter. On a normal summer day it’s 74 during the day and 70 at night regardless of if people are home or not. In the winter it’s 70 all day.

We don't really use a thermostat at all. In the winter our propane stove in the livingroom has a thermostat that sorta kinda works.. we have electric heaters built into each room and we use window AC units.  The electric heaters, again, have a sorta thermostat similar to how a space heater would work. We try to keep keep the unused  rooms from going below 60 degrees in the winter but that's all they get unless someone is in them.
