Would you date an alcoholic?

I hit yes because even recovering/recovered alcoholics still call themselves alcoholics. So why would I hold it against them if they have gotten it under control?

These comments are harsh. I’m in recovery with 2 years clean and my boyfriend has been clean for nearly 3 years. We’ve been together for a little over two years and no, it has not been constant drama and relapse. 
The girl who said recovering addicts still identify as addicts is absolutely right. We do—because recovery is a lifestyle that has to be consciously decided on when we open our eyes every morning. It’s not a destination, it’s a journey. Once an addict, always an addict. 
Sorry for the rant...it’s just a touchy subject for me. Being an addict doesn’t always mean you lack morality..I’ve seen good, kind people taken down by something they were given by a doctor—myself included.

No I have to think of my daughter and my own safety. My dad was an alcoholic and he was extremely verbally abusive when he was angry. Theres no way id want to risk dealing with that as an adult.

My mom was a raging alcoholic and it destroyed my family. I could never willingly put myself through that.

Depends. If I loved their personality, yes, I would, but I’d want them to start helping themselves and drink less alcohol. Not for me, but for their health.

It isn't that I have anything against addicts but if that is something they are already struggling with in life I wouldn't want to date them. Now if the person I was already with developed an addiction over time I might try and stay and help them through things but it depends how bad it got. Addicts can only recover if thats what they want and have to continue to want and work for it, I would also never enable the addiction, or put myself in harms way.
