Hand written thank you notes?

Question

Is that old fashioned or still expected after a baby shower? I’m used to people doing it still but on the one hand I feel like saying thank you in person to those who came to the shower is sufficient and maybe only necessary for those who sent gifts and didn’t attend in person?

I write a thank you for every gift I receive and have since I could write. I don’t think the practice is old fashioned or outdated. People got lazy. Sometimes ungrateful. Sometimes entitled. I’m not saying any of those are the case here. But. If someone takes the time to think of me, pick out a gift, get it to me, and help me celebrate something, the least I can do is spend 3 minutes and a stamp to thank them. I don’t know anyone who hates receiving a thank you card and I would honestly be totally embarrassed not to send them. I certainly don’t write people off for not sending a note, but they look ungrateful and I’m less likely to send a gift in the future. 🤷🏼‍♀️

I feel like no one wants to write thank you notes and no one wants to receive them, but we all keep doing them because we’re scared to be rude lol. I’ve never left an event and thought months later “I can’t believe that bitch didn’t write me a cheesy thank you card!”

We did them for our showers 🤷🏻‍♀️I enjoy writing them and taking the time (also bc I’m sort of a weirdo 😂) i don’t think it was expected of me, but who doesn’t like receiving mail that’s not junk mail?😝

I think it's nice to write thank you notes for gifts received for a big event like a wedding or baby shower. It's a pain to write them, but I find that when I do, I remember who gave me what for years to come, so when I use the gift, I think of that person, and I think that's nice. I still remember who gave me certain gifts for my bat mitzvah, and that was nearly twenty years ago! If I didn't write thank you notes, people from my parents' generation would think I never received it or was rude. People from our generation probably wouldn't even notice. I don't think it's as much of a rule as it used to be.

I still write thank you notes. To me its expected. But my husband and his friends don't do it so I don't know which way is the norm. I have my daughter wrote Tahnj you notes for her Christmas and Birthday gifts.

I wrote thank you notes to everyone at my shower. Just felt like the right thing to do because everyone for the most part actually bought off my registry, instead of buying a bunch of stuff I didn’t need, and I was super grateful. My first pregnancy 7 years ago, nobody used the registry, I think I just thanked them all in person. I don’t think it’s old fashioned, I think it’s nice. But if you choose not to, I don’t think that’s wrong. Nobody is going to be upset if you don’t. It’s just a personal preference.

I'd be pissed if I spent my hard earned money on a gift for you AND then spent my free time at YOUR baby shower to pay attention to you for 4 hours and didnt get a thank you card. I just had my shower on the 18th, I made sure to go around to every table to say hello tried my best to say thank you to everyone before they left and my hand written thank you cards are already in the mail. Maybe I'm old school like that or it's just the area im from (LI, NY), but think of it this way- even if you wouldnt be offended if someone did what you wanna do, there probably is a handful who would. People appreciate you recognizing what they did for you.
