Is it worth it to get a financial counselor for debt?

I’m embarrassed to say this. I have a lot of debt, it’s all medical bills except one credit card. A few of them have gone to collections. I had a lot of medical issues which are mostly resolved now, but it racked up a ton of medical bills, because my health insurance sucks. I had a credit card, it was totally under control until my abusive ex left me and took almost everything I had. I used the credit card to replace things I needed, plus to get food to get me by. I nearly lost my apartment because he left, I had a very low income.

Now I make more money but I have so many medical bills I can’t keep up, nor can I keep track of who/what I need to pay. Then on top of that I have to try to decipher which calls are actual debt collectors and which ones are scams. I became very depressed because of the debt and medical issues. I’m going back to work soon (from short term disability) and I’m ready to start paying off my debt. If I get a financial counselor are they able to track down all the places I owe money to? Are they expensive to hire?

I roughly estimated that I owe about 6-7k in medical bills and about 1k for the credit card. My fiancé and I intend to buy a house in the next year or two so I need to fix my credit, plus I want it all paid off before we get married anyway. Any advice is appreciated, thanks
